This report covers an 18 day period from 11th February to 1stMarch. The timing of this trip was governed by our commitments to running Kingfisher Park Birdwatchers Lodge, which at this time of year, the “Wet Season”, is very quiet with few guests. Our friends Kath and Dave from Cooktown looked after the Lodge in our absence and we thank them for doing such a great job whilst we were away.
We chose this trip to the southern part of South Australia as it was an area where we had not been, although Keith had birded in the northern part of the state along the Birdsville and Strzelecki Tracks before. We decided to radiate out from Adelaide to bird areas of the Coorong, Flinders Ranges, Kangaroo Island and all places in between including a side trip to the Birdlife Australia reserve Gluepot, north-east of Adelaide.
Links have been updated in 2026 but other information from 2013 maybe out of date so check if not sure.

From here we headed into the city where we found the SA Parks office and got a few brochures and some information. Many parks and conservation parks are free so we decided that it was not worth buying a pass as we had not intended to go to any of the parks which had charges on them. A Holiday Pass cost $55.50 per vehicle and gives 2 months unlimited entry to all parks in South Australia excluding Desert Parks.
Not far from the parks office is the the Adelaide Optical Shop where we collected a pair of Leica binoculars that we had sent to be repaired. We also dropped off another pair of Leica ultravids for an eyecup repair. The Adelaide Optical Shop is one of the few places which repair many of the top end brands of binoculars and scopes, Since this trip Leica have opened up their own repair facility in Melbourne, details are: Leica Camera Australia Pty Ltd.
From here it was to our accommodation for the next two nights, Brownhill Tourist Park where we had booked a cabin. We chose this location as it was reasonably close to the city and easy access to roads out of Adelaide. Upon arrival we were given another upgrade (two in the one day!), to a larger cabin, nothing flash but adequate. After sorting ourselves out we went to the nearest shopping centre to stock up with supplies for the rest of the trip.
After dinner it was still light (about 8.00pm), so we had a five minute stroll down the road to check out Australian Magpie, Grey Butcherbird, Rainbow Lorikeet, Sulphur-crested Lorikeet and a Little Raven.
Slow start to the morning as it did not get light until 6.30. had a cuppa before going for a walk up onto the hills surrounding Brownhill Creek. Good views of Adelaide from half way up the hill. Birds were quiet but we did see a few new birds for the state and trip list such as Common Bronzewing, Galah, Crimson Rosella (Adelaide form), Superb Fairy-wren and New Holland Honeyeater.
The rest of morning was a city day visiting the excellent South Australian Museum and catching up with an old friend working at the Adelaide Zoo where we had lunch and yes the silver gulls were eating chips at the cafe! A small boy was sharing his bag of chips with them, the gulls fought over every chip. This was a trip tick along with other scroungers in the area, Spotted Turtle Dove, Yellow-throated Miner and Crested Pigeon.
The afternoon was very hot and not bird friendly conditions so after a break we decided to go to the Adelaide Hills to visit the Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens. We arrived at 3.45 only to find they closed at 4 o'clock, so took a 10min walk and left.
Mt. Lofty Botanic Gardens
Next stop was Mount Lofty Summit in the Cleland Conservation Park where we had to pay $3.00 to park. We had a quick look at the summit building and shop then left. Followed the road back down to the Brownhill Tourist Park park where we explored further along the road in an area of a proposed dam. Turned around and went back to our cabin as 29ÂșC was too hot for walking and bird activity.
11/02/2013 - 13/02/2013 Brown Hill Conservation Park Habitat: Open WoodlandUp early to get ready to go travelling before negotiated the rush hour traffic to get out of Adelaide and onto the freeway (M1) where we turned off at Hahndorf for Williamstown. This route took us through the Adelaide Hills wine growing area, plenty of wineries along here. Stopped at Warren Reservoir to check off a few waterbirds, there is a good pull off area overlooking the reservoir. A scope is handy for checking out the shore line.

Next destination was Brookfield Conservation Park, this was a mistake! Rough track for the car with not very good signage.
Managed to take a wrong turn on the way out and got a bit bushed until we back tracked and found the way out.

Continued along the road and turned off to Blanchetown on the Murray River where we found a spot by the river for a late lunch. Hundreds of cormorants along the barrage here with a few pelicans fishing. After lunch moved closer to the barrage and checked out the cormorants plus a flock of Little Corella on the bank of the Murray.
After 10 minutes we headed back to the highway and continued on to Waikerie where we found the Waikerie Caravan Park and booked into our cabin. Pretty basic place in need of a bit of maintenance but it was OK for our needs. Spent the evening sorting out emails and getting organised for the next day.

Had a restless night with the air-conditioner making noise and woke up early for a day at Gluepot. After a coffee and a banana for breakfast we met up with Peter Waanders, a bird guide who runs Southern Birding Services. He whisked us off towards Gluepot Reserve our destination for the day. Saw a couple of Stubble Quail along the Taylorville Road.
Further along we stopped before reaching Gluepot Reserve to look for Chestnut Quail-thrush, which we found - a lifer!
Then into Gluepot Reserve which is BirdLife Australia's first publicly funded reserve situated in the semi-arid mallee of South Australia. First stop was the Gypsum Lynette Walk which is a 5.5km walk, we ended up doing more like 7km as we frequently went bush looking for birds! Saw some good birds such as White-browed Woodswallow, Southern Scrub Robin and Striated Grasswren. The grasswrens were foraging in between the fallen mallee and would not come out for a clear image to be taken, this was the best one.
The rest of the morning was spent driving around, stopping then walking into the Mallee where we found some good birds, but none of the target species. Had lunch at a bird hide watching Brown-headed and Yellow-plumed Honeyeater come in to bathe at a bird bath. Very hot. - around 35ÂșC.
After lunch we continued searching for Scarlet-chested Parrot without any luck so headed to the visitor centre and checked it out. Walked around the nearby dams for Major Mitchell Cockatoo again no luck. So we left but did not get far before we saw a flock of miners working their way through the Mallee. Jumped out of the car and followed them for a while before Peter got the scope on them and eventually getting onto a pure Black-eared Miner in the flock of Yellow-throated Miner – another lifer. Followed the flock and got some better views of the Black-eared Miner and tried to take some photos but they would not oblige so gave it away. Had one last look for Scarlet-chested Parrot before heading back to Waikerie

Saw a few birds along the way back to Waikerie including Black-tailed Native-hen and Eastern Great Egret along the River Murray and in town Apostlebird and Crested Pigeon. Also saw and photographed a Bearded Dragon which was on the side of the road by a gate we had to open.
Back at the Waikerie Caravan Park we said goodbye to Peter who is great company and an excellent bird guide, well worth hiring him for a day out. After this long and tiring day we succumbed to to a Magnum (chocolate covered ice cream on a stick) for a Valentines Day treat! A great day in the heat with two lifers and many more good birds for the South Australian list.
Woke up about 6.00am and when it got light enough we drove a short distance along the road from the caravan park to Hart Lagoon where there is a bird hide.
This wetland proved to be very productive with over 40 species. Good birds were Australian Shelduck, Australasian Shoveler, Chestnut Teal, Buff-banded Rail, Spotless Crake lots of Red-kneed Dotterel (30+), Superb Fairy-wren and Chestnut-rumped Thornbill. Excellent spot but we can imagine that in dry times it would be very disappointing.

Waikerie to Coorong
Back to the cabin for breakfast and left at 9.30 for the next leg of the journey. After a few wrong turns we eventually found the ferry and crossed the Murray. We were heading to Renmark but saw a turn off to Berri which cut a corner saving us some time. By the time we arrived at Berri it was smoko time so we found a spot along the Murray River and had a cuppa. A few birds were along the river but nothing we had not seen before. Called into the information bureau and picked up some more useful paperwork.
A short drive of about 30 minutes south took us to Loxton where we found the Murray again and a lunch spot as it was midday by now. First up Lindsay found two Tawny Frogmouth roosting in a River Red Gum by our picnic table, one above the other, they called occasionally whist we had lunch. Apart from that it was pretty much the same birds we had seen at other places along the Murray but we did have a few hundred Little Corella as neighbours!
Lunch took an hour before we continued heading south. This stretch of road from Loxton to Tailem Bend was quite uninteresting as it passed through vast areas of cleared land where grain was grown and the occasional silos popped up beside the road in small towns. By the time we reached Tailem Bend we were ready for a cup of coffee so we parked up in town and found the information centre where we collected a few more bits of paper. The guy at the centre directed us to the best coffee in town at the local bakery. We had a cappuccino and shared a custard tart which was very nice. Fuelled up on the edge of town and turned onto the road to Meningie for the 50km journey. Found the caravan park alongside Lake Albert and booked into our cabin which was quite new and better than the last two we had stayed in. Rested up for a while, checked out a few birds around the lake and decided to try out the restaurant adjacent to the Caravan Park which was attached to the cheese factory. Had a lovely fish meal of the local Coorong Mullet with chips and salad whilst watching a thunderstorm over Lake Albert.
Lake Albert
Plenty of lightning strikes on the far side of the lake but none where we were or any rain.
Purple-gaped Honeyeater
We planned an early start to the Coorong to beat the heat, but the curtains were too effective and we overslept by 30 minutes so did not get away until nearly 7 o'clock, got to the Lakes Nature Trail at 7.50 and had breakfast.
Set off on the 3km trail as it started to get hotter, so we decided to walk the first section and then rest up in the shade. Spent the time trying to work out unfamiliar calls, but overall not too much action due to the heat. We did find some Purple-gaped Honeyeater without too much trouble, another lifer.
A Fan-tailed Cuckoo was also very obliging as it sat out in the open.

From Wellington we drove to Clayton Bay and stopped at a roadside lagoon where we had some good birds including two Latham's Snipe and another Australian Spotted Crake. Drove around the other side of the lagoon to Clayton Bay where we had smoko and watched the birds. Good birds here were Great Crested Grebe, Crested Tern and four Red-rumped Parrot who came down to the boat ramp to have a bathe.
Lat: 35 29 51S Long: 138 46 0E
After here we went down to the Goolwa Barrage on the Murray River and onto the Goolwa Beacon 19 boat ramp, after a bit of trouble finding the right road and going onto Hindmarsh Island by mistake.. Here were plenty of mudflats with lots of birds including Another Great-crested Grebe, Little Egret, Black-shouldered Kite, Red-necked Avocet, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Caspian Tern and Pacific Gull. Great spot but too many people around being Sunday.
Lat: 35 31 41S Long: 138 46 31E
After this we had to do some shopping in a local supermarket and grab a sandwich and coffee at a local café. It was then time to drive down to the ferry to cross over to Kangaroo Island. Got there in plenty of time and booked in before putting the car on the ferry and setting off five minutes early.
Uneventful crossing which took nearly an hour, no birds sighted on the water. From the ferry we headed to Vivonne Bay about an hour and fifteen minutes away where we had booked Honeymyrtle Cottage.
Honeymyrtle Cottage
The Honeymyrtle Cottage had two bedrooms, bathroom, separate toilet, lounge, kitchen and verandas on two sides. Lindsay filled up the bird bath and within seconds a flock of Silvereye were bathing along with a Purple-gaped Honeyeater – a lifer two days ago. Other species came in to drink and bath as well including Crescent Honeyeater. There was also a Rosenberg's Goanna in the garden, which was nice. Tried to log on but reception is very poor (2013) so gave it away, also no TV which was no great loss (2013). Had dinner and drove down to the beach for a quick stroll before returning to the cottage after another great day.
Rude awakening to the morning at 6.00am due to a previous guest leaving the radio alarm switched on! Still quite warm overnight but slept well. Had breakfast and headed of to Seal Bay National Park which did not open until 9.00am. So we took a short detour to Bales Beach. This was a good spot with Southern Emu-wren and Splendid Fairy-wren in the heath behind the beach and two adult and one immature Hooded Plover on the beach. Took some images of the hoodies.

Purple-gaped Honeyeater
Next stop was the park information centre. Outside was a sprinkler, which had Purple-gaped, Crescent and New Holland Honeyeater fighting over a few drips of water in the sprinkler head.
Back on the South Coast Road we took a short detour after a few kilometres to check out Murray Lagoon, which is in the Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park and Wilderness Protection Area. The only access to the lagoon was via a walking track, which we were not prepared to do as it was getting very hot. We went to have our morning coffee and found we had left the flask of hot water behind so ended up having iced coffee which was a much better idea! After this detour we had planned to go to American River to look for Glossy Black Cockatoo, but decided to go to Kingscote instead. We went to the esplanade and along the coast to Reeves/Beatrice Point, near Kingscote, where there is a bird hide. Again another hide obviously not designed by birdwatchers, could not get tripod in right place as hole for viewing did not allow an angled scope to fit in, especially if you wanted to sit down. Apart from that there were a few birds to look at, lots of Black Swans and Grey Teal swimming in the ocean, Pied and Sooty Oystercatcher foraging along the beach and both Little Pied and Black-faced Cormorant loafing on a sandbar.
After we had recorded the shorebirds we retreated to a picnic table in the shade, where we logged on and put a few lists onto Eremaea (now eBird). It was now getting close to lunch time so we stopped the computing and went back to town where we parked up and had a stroll around. Had a very nice lunch at a street café called Rogers which was also the newsagents. Quiche and salad for Keith, toasted salmon and cheese panini with salad for Lindsay. Next destination was Stokes Bay and to look for Glossy Black Cockatoo, which have been seen in the area. Stokes Bay was not very exciting for birds, very rocky hillsides and rocky beach at the car park. People were heading off around the cove so we suspected there was a better beach there. We checked out a group of Crested Tern but nothing else with them and saw 31 Masked Lapwing foraging on a very bare patch of ground, not sure what they were eating.

Stopped off at the Lathami Conservation Reserve sign along the main road as there was no vehicle access into the park. Did a few hundred metre walk before the heat got too much for us, did not see any cockatoos.
Lat: 35 39 3S Long: 137 13 18E
Time to head home via Parndana along some dirt roads back to the South Coast Road. We had been watching the promised cold front approaching from the west and it finally reached us as we drove home. We watched the temperature drop from 35 back to 23 degrees in less than an hour, relief at last! Back at Honeymyrtle Cottage we had a relaxing evening planning tomorrows visit to Flinders Chase National Park.
Had a sleep in until 6.30 and a slow start to the morning. There was no point in rushing to Flinders Chase National Park as the visitor centre does not open until 9.00am – office hours, not birdwatching hours! Arrived at the park just after 8.30 and parked up with several other early arrivals.
Had a walk to the visitor centre and saw a Koala climb down a tree and cross the road before heading bush, this is what he thought of us!
Koala
Did a bit of birding along the road and found an Eastern Spinebill amongst other honeyeaters. Eventually the visitor centre opened and we paid our $20.00 entrance fee (now Free 2026). Started out on the Platypus Waterholes Walk from the centre and immediately three Glossy Black-Cockatoo flew over, which was very nice. The walk is 4.5km to the Platypus Pool, no Platypus as there was not much water but it was a haven for the birds with many honeyeaters coming in the bathe, mainly Crescent and New Holland but a few Purple-gaped, Brown-headed, and White-eared appeared. Also here was Striated Thornbill and a single Purple-headed Lorikeet both new for the state tick list.
Crescent Honeyeater - female
Decided not to do the complete walk so backtracked to the car park saving about 1km walking.

It was long past smoko time so we headed for the picnic area and had a cuppa before we drove to Remarkable Rocks at the southern edge of the park. Very touristy with a coach load of Chinese arriving as we did plus lots of other people but the rocks were quite spectacular. We were allowed to go onto the rocks and around the seaward side where it was howling a gale.
From here we drove the short distance to Admirals Arch at Cape de Couevic and did a short walk to the seal lookout. Nobody here which was great, plenty of New Zealand Fur Seal lounging on the rocks with a few Silver Gull, Pacific Gull and a Nankeen Kestrel.
Lat: 35 3 40S Long: 136 42 17E
Just back along the road from here was a turn off to Weir's Cove where Western Whipbird had been recorded.
Stopped at the car park and took a short walk into the heath looking for the whipbird which proved elusive, but we did flush a Rock Parrot which was great. The parrot obliged by sitting on a dead branch for some images to be taken before two of its mates flew by and it took off to join them on a nearby dead branch.
After this excitement we checked out the ruin of a house which was beside the car park and admired the cutting down the rocks to a jetty, where supplies were landed for the construction of the Cape du Couedic Lighthouse built between 1906-1909. The lighthouse site was inaccessible by land so Weirs Cove, 1 mile north of the lighthouse site, was selected for landing supplies. Originally supplies were carried up a zig-zag path to the top of the 92m cliffs until a flying fox was constructed. This was operated by two horses until a motor was fitted.
We left without seeing or hearing the whipbird.
By now it was well past lunch time so we went back to our table at the picnic ground near the park visitor centre. Enjoyed a few sandwiches and went for a walk around the well laid out camp ground before visiting the cafĂ© for a coffee and a piece of cake – yum. It was hot and we were birded out and fancied an early finish to the day so we went back to Honeymyrtle Cottage and had a Kangaroo Island Kangaroo drinking at the water bowl, almost drunk it dry! In the late afternoon we went for a walk down to the mouth of the Harriet River, which did not quite reach the ocean due to a sandbar blocking the way. Walked along the beach and up a wooden walkway to the coast road then completed the circuit by walking down Crabb Road and back to the cottage, no birds on the beach.
Up at 6.00am for a cuppa and to clear up before breakfast. Hit the road and arrived at American River by 8.30 to check for Glossy Black Cockatoo, which were known to be here. Along the foreshore, plenty of Grey and Chestnut Teal, Black Swan and Australian Shelduck, Common Greenshank, Pied and Little Pied Cormorant pus a couple of Pied Oystercatcher. No sign of Glossy Black Cockatoo despite searching. Quite a quirky place with a real mixture of shacks, daggy buildings and quite nice houses and lots of tourist accommodation.
Cape Jervis to Mount Barker
Left town about 9.30 to go the Penneshaw to catch the 10.30 ferry. Arrived with plenty of time to spare, the wait was made longer by the crew trying to shoe-horn in as many vehicles as possible. Had to fold in the wing mirrors as the cars were so close. Eventually left nearly 30 minutes late. The journey to the mainland was a lot rougher than the crossing out to Kangaroo Island but we arrived in one piece and eventually got the car off the ferry. Managed to navigate to the Mt. Barker Caravan Park and Tourist Park where we booked in for two nights. The cabin had one of the best layouts so far. Not much birding today.
We were suitably impressed and stayed 4 hours wandering around to check out the waterbirds. Spotted Crake were in abundance with at least 50 seen and several photographed.
Other good birds were Freckled Duck, Latham's Snipe, Elegant Parrot and Little Grassbird foraging on the muddy edges of the lagoons.
Little Grassbird
This a must visit wetland not just to see the birds but to see how waste raw sewage can be treated and end up as clear cool water which can be used in a variety of ways such as irrigation, watering parks and gardens. Managed to record 49 species in 3 hours.
Lat: 35 4 12S Long: 138 52 58E
After this it was back to reality and a visit to the local supermarket to stock up on supplies before going back to the cabin. In the afternoon we headed off to Scott Creek Conservation Reserve, which is about 30 minutes away from Mt. Barker. We found an access point but a vehicle with its door open was parked in front of the access gate and a guy appeared out of the bushes, obviously not a bird watcher so we kept going along the road until we found another entry point on Mathews Road. Birding was quiet here but we did see a Crested Shrike-tit which flew into some reeds and began foraging before flying up into an exposed tree branch for excellent views. We ended up with 12 species for an hours birding, pretty quiet by our standards!. These two Robber Flies mating were a distraction from the birds.
We decided to return to the first place we stopped at and were getting organised, when a police vehicle pulled up and Keith had to give a breath test. We had seen a few police vehicles around the area and wondered if we were being followed!

Up and away by 7.30 to check out the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens again.
This time it was a bit cooler and there was a bit more bird activity, Chiming Wedgebill was a nice sighting near the Visitor Centre in the top of a tree and again at one of the bird hides perched on a dead branch for some images to be taken. Mistletoebird was a new SA tick, plenty of fairy-wrens mainly Variegated but we did see a couple of White-wings. Had to get back to the cabin to vacate it before returning to the botanic gardens vistitor centre to have a coffee and cream scones. Saw a few birds whilst sitting in the air-conditioning looking through the window to a small soak – a much better way to birdwatch! Sparrow, Willie Wagtail and Zebra Finch another SA trip tick for Lindsay.

Time to head off to the Flinders Ranges, first stop was Quorn where we checked out the Powell Gardens but it was getting hot so bird activity was confined to the ever present White-plumed and Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater along with a group of magpies and a couple of Galah. The other common honeyeater around these parts is the singing and we were not disappointed as we saw one as we were leaving town.

From Hawker it was about 35km to our home for the next three nights, Rawnsley Park Station.
Booked in and got sorted out before having a well earned snooze in air conditioned comfort. We decided that the temperature had dropped sufficiently for us to venture out and do some birding.
Went to the Flinders Rangers information centre at Wilpena and wandered around the surrounding habitat but nothing much to report – Port Lincoln Parrot was about the most exciting bird. As it had cooled down a fraction we headed for Stokes Hill Lookout to try for the Short-tailed Grasswren, stopping to look at the complex of solar panels, which power the Wilpena community. Arrived at the lookout and took in the view before heading out into the Spinifex in an attempt to track down these elusive birds, well they remained elusive despite an hour tramping around some good habitat. An adjacent paddock to the one we were searching in had five guys on motorbikes shooting, which did not help. Went back to Rawnsley Park avoiding the many Kangaroos lining the road.
Alarm clock went off at 6.00am whilst it was still in the bag, got knocked on accidentally but it did not matter as we were awake anyway. Had a coffee, made some sandwiches for breakfast and set off for Stokes Hill lookout again. Had to avoid the suicidal kangaroos along the way so drove slowly and got to the lookout about 7.30. and realised that Keith had left his binoculars behind!
Had breakfast and then set off combing the hills, up and down ridges amongst the Spinifex and rocks but once again dipped out after nearly two hours searching. It was quite cool but a very strong breeze made hearing any birds calling impossible. Never mind will try another time if they manage to survive in this marginal habitat.
Lat: 31 27 32S Long: 138 44 8E Short-tailed Grasswren site.
Headed back to Rawnsley Park and stopped off at Wood Duck Dam, where there were two wood duck! Had a cuppa here and watched birds coming into drink including 21 Peaceful Dove, Crested Pigeon, lots of ringnecks and some Mulga Parrot. Took some images of a dragonfly which was hanging around a soak. Also on the water were two Little Grebe, a Pacific Black Duck and a Grey Teal and circling above was a Wedge-tailed Eagle. A good smoko stop.
Back at Rawnsley we picked up the binos and drove around the property to check out the walking tracks.
Saw some Southern White-face and Chestnut-rumped Thornbill sitting in a low bush sheltering from the hot sun along with quite a few Emu but not much else. Back at the cabin there were Superb Fairy-wren and Jackie Winter along with Singing and Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater. Late afternoon we went back to Wood Duck Dam which was very quiet. The evening was spent having a meal at the Woolshed Restaurant just a short walk from the cabin.
Just for a change we were up early and off to Wilpena arriving at 7.10 on a cooler morning with plenty of cloud cover, 24 degrees. Set off on a walk past the camp ground and off towards Wilpena Pound. Pretty quiet for birds but a few were showing along the way including White-faced Heron, Laughing Kookaburra (6), Variegated Fairy-wren, Yellow-rumped and Inland Thornbill, Grey Fantail and Common Blackbird. The walk was an 8km round trip with a lot of it uphill passing Hills Homestead which was the home of the first settlers to farm the areA.
Hills Homestead
More uphill but the views over Wilpena Pound were certainly spectacular and well worth the effort.
On the way down we came across this Red-barred Dragon, quite spectacular.
Back at the camp ground we had a bird wave visit, Yellow-throated Miner, Apostlebird, Australian Magpie and Australian Raven all looking for hand outs, which we did not have.
Australian Magpie |
Late afternoon we went out to Arkaroo Rock, which is on the way to Wilpena, and walked part way along the track to the rock. All was quiet, four Wedge-tailed Eagle were soaring over the mountain range and we eventually heard Australian Raven and Weebill. Still very hot so we headed off to Wood Duck Dam where we sat for 25 minutes. Not many birds, a Whistling Kite was overhead, one Pacific Black Duck, three Australasian Grebe and a small flock of Inland Thornbill passed by. Plenty of kangaroos came down to drink and cool off in the water, mainly Western Grey along with at least one Big Red hanging around.
On our way out we nearly ran over this Shingleback skink which was sunning in the middle of the road, not a good idea.

Headed south through Hawker and onto the RM Williams Highway for Orroroo. Arrived at Orroroo and had trouble finding the Lions Picnic area due to poor signage which stopped directing once we hit town, eventually followed our noses and found it. Pleasant place to have smoko with a feral duck and it's partner a European Coot!
Continued south and pulled off the highway to Bundaleer Forest Reserve where there is a nice picnic area with seats and shade. Went for a short walk after lunch but nothing much around. Bundaleer Forest Reserve was the birthplace of forestry in Australia when trial plantings were begun here in 1876. More history about the beginnings of the forest can be found on the government website, Trove. https://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/43012393.

From here we continued south to Clare passing wide open fields of cut grain and sheep. Arrived at Clare and refuelled before going to the Clare Caravan Park and our cabin. Had a short break before deciding to go out to check out the nearby Spring Gully Conservation Park. Got off to a good start by reversing into a post outside the cabin-grrr. Found the conservation park after once again poor signage. Directions started off from the highway but then no more. Parked up and went for a walk along a track but very quiet, Adelaide Rosella, Grey Fantail and a couple of Galah. Did not stay long as we headed for home but got waylaid along the way by a few birds, Brown Treecreeper and a highlight our second sighting of a Crested Shrike-tit – a nice male. Turned out to be a good place after a slow start. This conservation park protects the only stand of red stringybarks in South Australia.

Slow start to the morning, getting packed up, checking out a few birds around the cabin and having breakfast outside after the noisy neighbours had gone to work.

Headed off towards Adelaide, we were aiming to get to the for morning smoko at the Watershed Café, which is at the Greenfields Wetlands Took a diversion off the road to go to a shopping centre as it was the only place for a loo stop! After this we looked for Barbary Dove in Salisbury without any success. By now we were getting some rain, not too heavy but showery. Eventually arrived at the Watershed café in the rain and had a lovely cup of coffee and raisin toast, quite an upmarket café with upmarket prices. The rain was persistent and thwarted any ideas of walking around the wetlands so we drove around trying to find some vantage point to view the birds. Found one area which was quite good and another area near the salt works where we walked a short track as the rain had eased off.

Adelaide to Okaparinga NP
From here we returned to the main road, stopping at Barker Inlet Wetlands but again the drizzle put paid to any walking, had a quick scan but nothing of any great note. Back on the road to Glenelg we travelled through Port Adelaide which is a very interesting industrial part of Adelaide with some old building which had been renovated along with some that had not, quiet a mixture. It was like being back in England as we drove through Hendon, Fulham, Hove, Brighton and then Kingston Park!
We detoured off the main road to follow the coast road at Hallett Cove (another place for Barbary Dove – but no sightings here), checking out the real estate as we went. Plenty of pretentious mansions, one with a turret, and other older places which had a variety of architecture - not all good. We were looking for the Okaparinga River Recreational Park and found a parking spot overlooking the river next to the very busy and noisy highway but it had a shelter so we had lunch and logged on whilst a few showers passed by. After this we drove around until we found a parking spot where there were some walking trails. It had stopped raining again so we went for a short walk along the river. Saw our first Golden-headed Cisticola of the trip and back at the car park good views of Musk Lorikeet.
It was getting late in the afternoon and Lindsay was getting birders fatigue so we took off for Mt. Compass our overnight destination. Stopped at Willunga just off the highway to get some fish and potatoes for dinner. Followed the old winding highway out of town until it joined the newer by-pass road and continued on to Mt. Compass. Found the road south of the town and turned off onto Cleland Valley Road which lead to Compass Country Cabins and booked into a cabin for the next two nights.
Compass Country Cabins
The rain had virtually stopped and the temperature was dropping below 20 degrees so a hot cup of coffee was called for. Lindsay cooked up the fish we had just bought and made a delicious meal.
Cox Scrub
Went for a walk along the road near the cabins and picked up Red-browed Finch (just like being home!). Had breakfast and decided to go out birding whilst waiting for a phone call from our friend. Had a quick look for the Mount Compass Wetlands but it did not look very inviting so we kept on the road to Scrub Conservation Park.
Cox Scrub Conservation Park is located on the western side of the Goolwa Road, 8km from Ashbourne. This park is 544ha and consists of open scrub and tall open shrubland formations of Brown Stringybark with Sugar Gum over Banksia ornata and/or Leptospermum myrsinoides, Hakea rostrata, H. ulicina, Xanthorroea semiplanta and/or Pultenaea canaliculata, Platylobium obtusangullumandor alytrix teragonia andHibbertia stricta. This type of vegetation is uncommon in the Mount Lofty Ranges and covers the majority of the park. (Information from National Parks and Wildlife South Australia). We arrived at the park and followed a trail towards some bird action. Here were some eucalypts in flower attracting flocks of Musk Lorikeets and New Holland Honeyeater. A few Rainbow Lorikeet flew over and one perched in a tree but we know all about them so it just got a cursory glance. There were also a few Brown-headed Honeyeater here as well plus Little Wattlebird which was a SA trip tick. Continued on to a taller patch of Sugar Gum where more Musk Lorikeet were feasting on the blossom and Striated Pardalote were foraging, Grey Currawong were loudly calling from the top of a small shrub. It was windy and still cool so we headed back to the car. (Since our visit a large section of the reserve has been burnt out).
Back at Mt. Compass we bought two hot pies from the local bakery for lunch. Yum, had lunch with frozen apple and peach as the fridge was turned down too low! After a break we headed back into Mt. Compass to check out the wetlands by the school, the one we had seen in the morning was a new wetland on the opposite side of the road still being built. Found the boardwalk but appeared to be no water and no birds so we gave that away.
We then went off to Kyeema Conservation Park., which was once mined for alluvial gold for several years until it was abandoned in 1890. A few years later some of the area was cleared for pine plantations before being used as a labour prison reserve. Since the 1983 Ash Wednesday fires, the Friends of Kyeema Conservation Park have been re-vegetating cleared areas of the park. Today, Kyeema Conservation Park's native vegetation can be enjoyed along a number of walking trails, including the Heysen Trail which runs through the park. The combination of messmate stringybark, pink gum, cup gum and candlebark gum provide habitat for a diverse range of wildlife and more than 70 species of birds (information from Parks SA).
It proved to be an excellent move to visit this reserve as it had some good birds. Upon arrival at the car park we were set upon by a pair of killer Superb Fairy-wren who jumped onto the front of the car and attacked the wing mirror! We got over this welcome and started seeing a few birds, first a juvenile Golden Whistler got us going and the Crescent Honeyeater who took over from the absent New Holland Honeyeater as the most common honeyeater here. Walked a few kilometres and were rewarded with a Scarlet Robin, only our second one for the trip, also here was White-throated Treecreeper. Back at the car park the fairy-wrens had been exacting revenge for us parking in their territory, they left many calling cards on both sides of the car! Little Raven and Red Wattlebird rounded off the visit. There was a detailed plan of the walking tracks in the car park, but, as is so often the case, the signs disappeared once you got on the tracks and we really weren't sure where we were going! Here is a tip (which I thought of after the event) – take a photo of the walking track plan then you can refer to it as you walk!

Back to the cabin where the temperature had soared up to 18ÂșC so we sat outside to finish off some cheese and biscuits washed down with a coffee and tried not to get blown away by the strong winds. Had a walk around the Mt. Compass Cabins property and added Rufous Whistler to the list. A good end to our last full day in South Australia.
Woke up early, before 6.00am and had a coffee before getting the bags packed. Saw a few birds moving around outside so went to check them out and found a Goldfinch foraging on the ground, another SA trip tick! Also saw a White-browed Scrubwren as we were leaving.

Pretty uneventful journey to the airport where we dropped off the hire car and signed an accident form – no dramas here. Booked in and relaxed with a drink whilst watching the aircraft. Uneventful journey home but we learnt not to get seats in the row in front of the emergency exit as they are not adjustable, so it was a bit of a squeeze.
